Suit / Cabot Lab

Take on the role of a scientist and explore topics as diverse as DNA, chemistry, and plant biology in the Museum's drop-in laboratory.

Students use many of the real tools and techniques that a researcher might use. Staff and volunteers assist them in hands-on activities and genuine experiments, while encouraging them to develop science inquiry skills. Members of the Museum's live animal collection and other living organisms also make regular appearances in the lab.

Activities vary daily from the current list of program topics:

> DNAmazing!: Introduction to DNA and genetic technologies

> It's Not Easy Being Green: Plant biology

> Under The Microscope: Basic microscope-based exploration

Coming in 2010:

> Acids Rock!

> Getting Under My Skin

> Take a Bite Out of Molecules

School groups can request specific topics (subject to restrictions) by emailing the Suit/Cabot Lab at least two weeks in advance.

Data collection worksheets are available in the lab for most activities, and teachers are invited to ask about taking electronic data back to their classrooms for further inquiry and activities.

The Suit / Cabot Laboratory is open to visitors Monday - Thursday, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (except when special requests are made by schools. Check the Museum map / guide for availability) and Saturday, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Groups larger than 20 students are encouraged to contact us for field trip pre-planning and group scheduling. All groups are encouraged to contact the Suit / Cabot Lab in advance to see if the Lab will be available on the date of their visit.

Teacher support services are available at no charge. Contact the lab for more information: scl@mos.org, 617-589-4244.
