Catching the Wind

Learn about how turbines transform wind into green energy, and track energy production in the Museum's own Wind Lab, a group of nine wind turbines mounted on the Museum roof.

In Catching the Wind, visitors can dive into the world of wind turbines, learning how they generate electricity from the power of the wind, what sorts of factors need to be considered when selecting and siting a turbine, and what trade-offs we make when choosing any energy source.

Visitors can hear the stories of several different sites across Massachusetts where turbines were — and were not — installed, including the Museum of Science's own case study. With live data tracking in the exhibit, visitors can see which of the Museum's own turbines are currently producing electricity and hear about why and how we installed the wide variety of turbines. Visitors can also try their own hand at wind turbine siting in the "Wind Power Challenge" game, where they can choose a location, a turbine type, and see if it could power their home, business, or community.

Nearby, visitors can also explore another type of green energy, solar power, in the Sun Power exhibit.
